Preparing for a portrait session is key to ensuring you look your best and feel comfortable. Whether it’s for personal branding, senior portraits, family photos or professional headshots, a little planning can go a long way. Here’s how to get ready:
1. Plan Your Wardrobe
- Choose Outfits that Reflect Your Style: Select clothes that represent who you are. For personal branding, choose items that communicate professionalism or creativity, depending on your field. For seniors, ask you photographer about if they have any Style Closet options so you can expand your options.
- Solid Colors & Simple Patterns: Solid colors or subtle patterns work best for portraits. Avoid anything too busy or with thin stripes, as it can distract from your face and the stripes can actually look distorted online.
- Avoid Wrinkles: Make sure your clothes are freshly ironed or steamed to avoid distractions.
- Comfortable & Well-Fitting: Choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident, and ensure they fit well to avoid adjusting them during the session. You want to enjoy the experience, not feel self-conscious.
- Consider Layers: Layers like jackets, scarves, or cardigans can add texture and depth to your look, making your photos feel more dynamic.
- Accessories: Add accessories like a watch, jewelry, and/or belt to give a put-together look.
- Footwear: If your feet are visible in the shot, wear shoes that are clean and appropriate for the vibe you’re going for. (If the heels are more for show, then bring a pair of flats to walk in.)

2. Grooming & Personal Care
- Hair: Get a fresh haircut or style it in a way that feels natural for you. If you’re unsure, consider getting it done earlier in the week before the shoot, as freshly styled hair can sometimes be more difficult to manage.
- Skin Care: Hydrate your skin before the session to make sure it looks fresh. Avoid new skincare products right before the shoot, as they might cause irritation or breakouts. A gentle exfoliation the day before can help with smoothness.
- Makeup: If you wear makeup, apply it as you normally would and then add just a little more than usual to ensure it shows up on camera. Matte finishes can reduce shine, and a light powder or setting spray will help your makeup last.
- Nails: Clean, well-maintained nails will be noticed in close-up shots. If you wear nail polish, make sure it’s freshly applied or consider a neutral color for timeless appeal.
3. Get Plenty of Rest
- Sleep Well the Night Before: A good night’s sleep will help you look refreshed and vibrant. If you’re tired it may show in your eyes or overall appearance, so get enough rest the night before.

4. Hydrate and Eat Light
- Drink Water: Stay hydrated the day before and the morning of your session. This helps your skin look fresh and glowing.
- Eat Light: Have a healthy meal before your session to avoid feeling hungry, sluggish or bloated.
5. Coordinate with Your Photographer
- Discuss Goals: Talk with your photographer about what you want to achieve with the session. How do you want to use the images afterward? Share any specific ideas you have, such as poses or types of shots, so they can plan accordingly.
- Location & Timing: If the shoot is outdoors or in a specific location, ensure you know where to go, what the weather will be like, and when the sun will be up. For indoor sessions, ask about lighting and backgrounds to coordinate with your wardrobe and props.
- Ask for Guidance: If you’re unsure about what to do during the session, don’t hesitate to ask your photographer for direction. They’re there to help you look your best!
6. Bring Any Necessary Props or Accessories
- Props: If you plan to use props for the session (like a laptop, books, or a product), make sure they’re packed and ready.
- Accessories: Simple jewelry, scarves, or belts can add an extra flair, but keep it minimal to avoid distractions from your face.

8. Be Mentally Prepared
- Relax & Have Fun: Portrait sessions should be fun! It’s a time to get away from life’s busyness and just enjoy the moment. Don’t stress about perfection; focus on having fun and being present in the moment. The best photos happen when you’re relaxed and confident.
- Mindset: Take a deep breath and focus on your goals for the session. Trust that your photographer will capture you in the best light.
