When to Book Your Senior Portraits

As a photographer in Texas, I know that timing your senior portraits can make all the difference. With hot summers and mild winters, our region offers flexibility—if you know how to plan around the seasons. Here’s what to consider:

Book Early to Get Your Ideal Date

Booking as early as the summer before your senior year gives us plenty of room to plan outfits, locations, and lighting for your ideal look. With limited weekend slots each season, early booking is your best move.

Summer Sessions (June–Early Sept)

Booking during the summer has some pros and cons. However, it can be really nice to kick off your senior experience with your portraits and then have your session done before all your senior school activities start.

  • Pros: Dramatic sunsets and no school schedule constraints.
  • Cons: Heat and humidity—heat-friendly styling is essential.
  • Pro tip: Schedule around golden hour or shoot in shaded, comfortable spots to stay refreshed and radiant (and drink water).

Fall Sessions (Oct–Early Dec)

Fall is a wonderful time to have your portraits done so you have them ready for all the Senior events, you get great weather, and you aren’t rushed in the Spring.

  • Pros: Soft light, mild weather, and a cozy aesthetic that works beautifully with boots and layers or short sleeves.
  • Cons: Cooler mornings and some rain, but still mild weather. These sessions book fast—reserve yours soon.

Winter Sessions (Jan–Feb)

These months have iffy weather, but they’re often a slow time during the school year and you’re more likely to get the dates you need with your photographer.

  • Pros: Enjoy soft winter light, cozy layered looks, and easier scheduling.
  • Cons: Shorter days, but still pleasantly mild compared to northern winters and you have portraits done before dinner.

Spring Sessions (Mar–May)

These are really busy senior portrait months. It’s desirable because the weather is lovely (even with the chance of rain) and the flowers are blooming so everything is beautiful. However, a lot of people try to rush their senior portraits into these months and end up concerned about meeting deadlines for turning in photos to various groups.

  • Pros: Warm days, blooming nature, and fresh colors perfect for grads.
  • Cons: Spring storms can pop up (choose a backup day for peace of mind), and can cut it close on photo deadlines.

Steps for a Stress-Free Senior Portrait

  1. Check your yearbook deadline and backtrack about 6–8 weeks for margin (in case of rain) editing, photo selection time and any printing needs.
  2. Build buffer time for ordering prints, announcements, or albums. Professional printers need a little extra time during busy time frames like Christmas and graduation season.
  3. Let your style take the lead—from summer florals to fall textures, choose the season that matches your vibe. Kasper Creations also offers a package to split your session between multiple seasons to get the best of everything.
